It has been a very sad day in Portland and for all NBA fans across the nation.
Early Friday afternoon, Brandon Roy announced that he will be retiring his basketball career at only 27-years of age due to a series of ongoing knee issues and surgeries within the last year and a half that has plagued him for the prime of his brief- yet impressive career.
Brandon Roy has been known as one of the most greatest Huskies to have ever done it. From University of Washington, to Portland Trail Blazers, he has brought the game and the fans nothing but an outstanding, exciting, and humbled irresistible game to watch. Roy came into the league in 2006 as the No.6 overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves and was traded to Portland on draft day, immediately becoming a true match for the team and the city.
The damage to Roy’s knees began in the 2008-2009 season; a bone contusion the season after, which limited him to only 65 games, and finally the double arthroscopic surgery of last year that sidelined him for 39 games and ultimately reduced to a bench role after his return in the middle of the season. And what a return it was!
It is very unfortunate for someone like Brandon Roy with so much potential to have to give up a career which he loved very much, but as a fan of the supreme-skilled player, I respect his decision and will forever respect what he brought to the league. However, somehow in the back of my mind I still believe that there is a chance for a comeback somewhere down the road.
Or has Brandon Roy really played the last of his NBA career game?
